BrickGals’ Cessie Takes On CrossFit Vida Brickell 90-Day Paleo Challenge

3 Oct

I started Crossfit back in May- with lots of skepticism, but lots of excitement as well. I had heard so much about it and figured I had to give this latest craze a try and see what it was all about! For a while I had been stuck. My normal workout routine reached a plateau and I wasn’t losing or gaining- I was basically stuck. Desp for a change, I tried Crossfit Vida Brickell. Who the heck knew I’d end up hating in and loving it all at the same time.CrossFit Vida Brickell

And so Brickgal Megan and I embarked on the notorious 90-Day Paleo/Crossfit Challenge, which has turned out to be the hardest damn challenge I have ever taken on in my life. Not just because I was practically married to dairy, but I’ve learned to manage my weight by eating anything I want- as long as I control my portions and get in some cardio. So, losing the cardio, lifting some major weight and eliminating cheese and grains were a major shocker for me- not to mention extremely hard to maintain.

While the truth is I did Paleo half assed - I stuck to it during the week but on weekends I ate whatever I wanted. In the beginning I was attending Crossfit Vida Brickell 4-5 times a week, but with my travels and long work days, on some weeks I was only able to go maybe 3 to 4 times. But, as the weeks went by I started to love Crossfit – and my body totally started to crave it whenever I missed it. And yes, Brickgals, I grew a love for wall balls and burpees- and of course, Double-Unders.

Paleo has been and continues to be a challenge for me, mainly because I love food- all kinds of food too damn much! And I don’t like feeling restricted when it comes to a diet- and that’s what Paleo makes me feel- restricted. But, numbers don’t lie- and when the results where in- well the truth of the matter is this: You want to tone up, get healthy, gain strength, lose inches and get leaner- Crossfit & Paleo work. LEGIT. And that’s the truth.

Even though I know I didn’t follow Paleo the way I should’ve and despite the fact I didn’t attend Crossfit as much as I should’ve- I still lost 1.5% of body fat!  I’ve lost so many inches and gotten so much more leaner- the fact that I actually gained weight in the beginning was frustrating, but fitting into size 4 after being sized for a 6 back in April made it all worth while!

So, Crossfit Vida Brickell is def going to continue to be a part of my life- I can’t imagine going back to a regular gym- ever. It seems like such a waste. Yeah its hard, and yeah you have to be dedicated, and yes- chipping my nails and having to wash my hair every other day sucks- BUT- none of those compare to the amazing feeling of looking and feeling better! So, head over to Crossfit Vida Brickell and don’t forget to mention the Brickgals sent you for $25 off your first month!

My Double Unders kick your Double-Unders’ ASS!

9 Aug

That’s right Brickgals! I do admit defeat when I must. And yeah, most of these Crossfit chicks can kick my ass at pretty much everything. But the one thing I am def #winning in (a la Charlie Sheen) is that most of these chicks can’t  do legit Double Unders even if they’re Paleo Life depended on it.

You heard right, my Double Unders blow lots of these Crossfit Chicks outta the water! They can snatch, but I can Double Under til I turn Pink! I guess being in the Jump Rope team back in elementary school paid off! I mean not only did Mr. Vercoe (my favorite P.E. Coach EVER in the HISTORY of P.E. coaches) lead us to the Dade County Youth Fair, year after year, only to come out winning in first place almost every time-but it turns out he helped mold me 20 years later into the star jump roper I still am! SIGH- such wonderful Double Dutch  memories from our PSN jump rope team.

Double Unders are just one of the many of my “Crossfit Favs”- over the last couple of weeks I’ve learned to discover which exercises I actually get excited to see on the daily WOD (800 meter runs, push ups, air squats, burpees, wall balls and sit ups) and which moves I could seriously never lose an ounce of sleep if I never saw again (Australian ring pull ups, overhead squats, snatches, dead-lifts and hand stand push-ups).  Not that the ones I love are easy, because in no way is there ANYTHING at Crossfit that is easy, but these are the ones I enjoy the most, because they combine cardio I love to run) with movements that work my overly developed (fat) areas.

What  I love the most about Crossfit is the new friends I’ve made that have not only helped and cheered me on, making me push it to the limit (You peeps know who you are)-THANK YOU! We’ve swapped tips, shared recipes, laughed, socialized and positively reinforced one another. What I love least about Crossfit is the holes in my hands (I bought cute Pink gloves to fix that) ruining my perfectly blow dried hair on a Monday (nothing a little baby powder can’t fix),  and the occasional manicure glitch  (today I hurt my finger and cracked my nail doing overhead squats). But as with everything in life, the pain is worth the gain!!!

I’ve lost so many inches and gotten so much leaner (thank you Paleo). Even though I do allow occasional cheat (my recent weekend included some Coal Fired Pizza and some Chinese Fried Rice)-believe me, I pay the price for it later. The weeks I am super strict, I perform much better, and feel much better before, during and after my workout.  The times I cheat, I don’t do as well ( I got major cramps during my run today). So I’ve truly witnessed the difference good nutrition has made in my own body.

If this isn’t convincing enough, a few months ago I had gotten fitted for a bridesmaid dress I need to wear in October. The measuring tape at Alfred Angelo said my measurements were between a 4 & a 6 back in April. I took the risk, ordered the 4 and prayed. I recently picked up my dress and its a PERFECT fit. No alteration needed whatsoever. I am a 4!!-And that makes all the holes in my hands, sweat in my hair and chipped polish worth every second. So, in the words of JBerg- GET SOME! Head to Crossfit Vida ASAP and tell them the Brickgals sent you- for $25 off your membership! Life is too short to be fat! Get to it!!

Trendy Nail Polish, Shiny Hair, Hello Kitty & Delivery! That’s a Boutique Pharmacy- oh yeah, Medicine too!

26 Jul

Listen up Brickgals, this past Saturday I uncovered your new best friend. After a delicious lunch at Burger & Beer Joint (Kobe Beef & Prosciutto burger to DIE for), my boyfriend and I were walking through #MBV (Mary Brickell Village for those not in the know) and stopped after a window with Moroccan Oil (a deep intense condition for dry hair that’s supposed to work magic) caught my attention. I quickly walked in to discover, the cutest, girli-est, trendiest boutique pharmacy ever! Mortar and Pestle Boutique Pharmacy is located in Mary Brickell Village, right next to the Subway on 9th St.

Mortar and Pestle Brickell Pharmacy

Mortar and Pestle Brickell Pharmacy

The owner was in the house, and she was super sweet and so helpful! She patiently walked me though the different options I had with the Moroccan Oil treatment, and helped me pick one that would be best for my super long, highlighted and processed hair. The pharmacy offers everything you’d get at your typical CVS, but with MUCH more personalized attention, and of course, all the amazing brands us Brickgals love! Essie Nail Polish – Check, OPI Crackle – Check, Moroccan Oil hair treatment – triple check! Selection of super adorable greeting cards, inspirational frames, a massive selection of the CUTEST Hello Kitty pens and collection (you are NEVER too old for Hello Kitty- EVER) and  a huge selection of facial products, organic body treatments, delicious smelling candles, a variety of hair treatments and products, the best T3 Hair Dryers and Flat Irons – uhhh yup! PLUSSSSS they accept all major insurance companies, AND they deliver! What more does a Brickgal need, (except an excuse to buy a new Essie polish every week, like me?! This week I bought “Trophy Wife” a perfect turquoise to go with the beautiful shades of the ocean!

BrickGal Megan has dreams of being a trophy wife. Big dreams.

PS. The Moroccan Oil is my new bff! Not only did I just return from a week long trip to Cancun where my hair was in salt water, chlorine and heat 24/7- but you’d never be able to tell, bc Moroccan Oil totally rocks. My hair is soft, shiny and healthy! Get your butts to Mortar & Pestle Boutique Pharmacy, I promise- you’ll thank me! ;-)

Cupcakes, Crossfit, Birthdays & 4th of July!

5 Jul

Oh my delicious breakfast.

I sit here devouring my egg white omelet from Sergio’s while I struggle to resist the croqueta  on my boyfriend’s plate. SIGH. One thing I can say about Paleo is that breakfast is my favorite meal. I LOVE LOVE LOVE omelets!

I can’t say its been easy this week, but what I can say, is that I’ve done it! Paleo ruled my life this week- and it was especially hard during my birthday weekend. My boyfriend made my family and I some delicious lasagna, while I munched on carrot sticks, almonds and made myself a pretty decent salad with the leftover ground turkey meat. I also had to forgo my delicious chocolate birthday cake and only had a small bite out of the red velevet cupcakes my god-daughter made me (give me a break she’s 8 and requested a try a bite- I couldn’t say no)!

I attended Crossfit 3 times this week.  Mad props for going to 7:30 am class on my birthday, considering I had the day off and could’ve slept. I did get sick mid week (nasty fever, sore throat and stuffy nose)- and had to miss two days because I seriously could not move. But the fact that I had no appetite made up for it. I did the travel WODS at home Friday morning because I had an early morning meeting close to my house- so al though I technically didn’t go to the box, I still got my WOD on! Oh and I am glad to say I tried on a dress I hadn’t worn in months- and it was pretty loose on me, even with the belt! I had some family members compliment me during my birthday and say I looked thinner- even though you and I know I’ve actually gained a little. So hey- maybe Crossfit IS working! Whooohooo!

The weekend is here, and I’m looking forward to a long couple of days filled with steaks, burgers and grilling! Til next week- Tootles

Crossfit, Cardio, Paleo & Frustration

20 Jun

It’s time to get real Brick Gals- and here comes the ugly truth. I’ve been slacking with Crossfit for almost the last two weeks. The truth is I’ve had quite the busy work weeks lately with events, press trip planning, client meetings and all sorts of PR girl stuff that will reasonably convince you that I’ve had a legit excuse to be M-I-A.

But, the truth is I’ve been frustrated and confused. Don’t get me wrong, I am loving Crossfit, and I love the rush and feeling I get from it after and I most definitely feel stronger. I can surely lift a lot more weight than I did than when I first started- and that’s awesome. But in actuality, I’ve gained almost 3 whole pounds. I know it sounds ridiculous, and Mr. Osuna has repeatedly asked me to throw away my scale- but for someone who has struggled to maintain a healthy weight- the scale has become my BFF- sorta like my weekly reality check. I’m sure a lot of you can relate!  OK so muscle weighs more than fat- but I feel bulkier- not trimmer and it’s really pissing me off!Crossfit Vida Brickell

I do miss my cardio- and even though Crossfit kicks my butt while I’m doing it, it’s been so hard for me to let go of the notion that I need 45 minutes of cardio a few times a week.  And don’t get me wrong, Crossfit sessions are no joke, but I do miss a kick ass spinning class, or a nice long run. Am I crazy Brickgals? Am I the only one who feels weird initially starting Crossfit and letting go of cardio? I must not be the only one who has trouble letting go of that Stairmaster!

And because I’ve gained a little, I’m beginning to feel that maybe for ME, I need to do some more cardio in addition to the death session (Crossfit).  Maybe I’m wrong- I sure hope so!

I know the majority of any weight loss program has to come from nutrition. In the beginning, I was really good with Paleo, and I admit- I take full responsibility for the lack of sticking to it consistently.  But in all honestly, straight up I’ve been HATING this Paleo lifestyle. Aside from the fact that it can get extremely expensive- I am BORED BITCHES! I mean how much meat, almonds, leaves and avocado can I eat? And no- I don’t have time to bake all these crazy Paleo recipes- this girl’s got a life- and it isn’t in the kitchen!

Plus, I miss my fiber one, my yogurt and those delicious Skinny Cow ice cream pops. WTH!  It’s really hard to get adjusted to- and even harder to stick to!  Does anyone else miss some good old corn on the cob? Or worse, some simple shredded cheese on their salads? Please tell me I’m not alone!L

I am frustrated when I think, how can eating whole wheat bread in the morning with your egg whites be bad? How can eating yogurt and a banana be the death of me? Why must I feel so guilty for having my latte with GASP- fat free milk? And most importantly- I need to fulfill my sweet tooth craving- and a microscopic piece of dark chocolate isn’t gonna cut it.

I made a promise to myself- that I’d take this 90 day Paleo challenge- but it’s been ridiculously hard, especially for a busy girl like me always on the go. Picture me at a client dinner saying, “I have to pass on the appetizers because my coaches say plantain chips will slowly kill me”- yeah not really an option in the PR world where I have to constantly be socializing.

I’ve also had a tough time figuring out portions with Paleo. I mean I’m used to portion control, measuring ounces, cups, tablespoons etc-I guess I am having difficulty understanding  how I can suddenly eat 3 burgers minus the bread and call it healthy?! I don’t get it.

I went back to Crossfit on Tuesday, for the first time in almost two weeks and I’m super sore again- and that’s the best feeling, because I truly feel that I pushed myself.  I am determined to get back into it, and I am getting my butt in gear with Paleo again so wish me luck! But um, it’s my birthday next week- anyone wanna bake me a Paleo cake?

Crosssfit Around the Clock

1 Jun

What’s up Brick Gals!  Memorial Day weekend is long and gone. SIGH. Is it Friday yet? For those of you who decided to stay in town, surely woke up early and went to the group WOD at Alice Wainwright Park in Brickell-right?! (BrickGal Megan did and got her ass kicked by Alex & Orlando, but the eye candy was totally worth it.)

Brickell Crossfit Vida

Outside WOD Group

This week I decided to grow some balls and finally get to the bottom of D630 (AKA the 6:30 am class).  Yes, bitches, this BrickGal cut into her beauty sleep (the Heat kept me up with that nail biting game) and woke up at the crack of 6 am. Not only did I discover that apparently there are roosters in Brickell (and they crow really loud) but also that waking up is probably the hardest part of the whole ordeal! The 6:30 morning class is pretty much awesome.  I technically only woke up 45 minutes earlier than I would for 7:30, but it made such a huge difference when I realized, I was done and had a much more relaxed morning without rushing. I even had time to make me a yummy veggie omelet (yayyyy Paleo!).

Later on in the week, I decided to give the Crossfit Blitz a try. Considering my office is literally two buildings down, Crossfit Blitz is a perfect mid day lunch break. I left at 12, hauled ass over to the box, quickly changed and within 15 minutes, I was dying. The only setback to the Blitz is the heat, especially now since the summer is here, making it even more hot! The outside warm-ups are no joke, its freakin HOTT! But once we started our WOD inside, it was cool. Except those ring pushups are recipe for facial deformation! Umm, picture this girl on her knees trying to do a pushup with her hands through two rings hanging from the ceiling. Yeah- it was more like my arms couldn’t keep steady and I kept falling on my face! After two of those, I gave up and resulted to my regular chick pushups. And I’m OK with that. All in all, Blitz is perfect- and I will def start incorporating it into my week to add some variety and of course, catch up on my sleep! The classes are small (I think there were no more than 15 of us), and the WOD is designed to be quick but intense.  In addition, the convenient showers (minus the annoying part where I had to bring my own towel) all made for a perfect mid day lunch workout, leaving my afternoon free to go play after work (Yayyy happy hour!).

All in all, I still enjoy my 7:30 p.m. class- I mean nothing beats Gio & Cisco screaming in your face during wall balls “Lower Cessie, Lower” (yeah umm, G, this isn’t LIV, and I’m not trying to be one Rick Ross’s video hoes).

** Side Note: Congrats to all the coaches and participants who participated in the Crossfit regional competition this weekend. Vida took 2nd Place! That’s right, BrickGals obs learn from the best!

CrossFit Challenge Update : Week Dos

14 May

What’s up Brick Gals?  I’m taking over Chitown this weekend, but not without giving you a little update on my torture aka Crossfit sessions.  Maybeeee I’m being a little dramatic here, but seriously, these classes are kicking my ass (hopefully into a firmer, more toned version). Speaking of ass- let me tell you how much I love (hate) wall balls. I mean obs there isn’t anything more enjoyable than squatting my tush to the floor, while tossing a 10 pound ball up in the air against the wall and catching it. But it gets better! On Wednesday, I was introduced to the Australian ring pull ups. Holy S bombs. I can’t tell you how painful those things are, considering how weak my upper body is right now. It’s been two days and I still can’t even raise my hand to order a drank without squinting a bit from the pain!  (solution: keep drinking)

CrossFit Vida Brickell

12 Commandments of CrossFit (Props to Olivia Jouffrey for Finding)

This week, BrickGal Megan and I knocked out the WOD (loving the lingo BTW) in the mornings with Larissa.  Letttt me tell you, there is nothing more motivating for wall balls than that chick’s ass.  BrickGals should all strive for her perfect bum!  All in all, I feel stronger every day- no joke! And not only do I feel stronger, but I feel great, with tons of energy!

* Note: I did get my body scan results in- and according to my BMI, while technically my weight falls under the “normal” weight category, my body fat % is outta control Brick Gals! Hi, my name is BrickGal Cessie and I am “skinny fat.”  I plan on fixing that ASAP! That’s where the Paleo Challenge is going to be so crucial to this battle between BrickGal Megan and I. We’re competing against each other to see who loses the most body fat. Not only are we judging eachother on the physical results (I mean DUH of course we both want to physically look amazing), but we have to prove that we’re actually getting healthier on the inside too!

For all your traveling ladies who can’t (or are just too lazy to get your ass to the nearest Crossfit) Vida has some amazing travel WOD’s- to make sue you stay on track, even when you’re far away from our Vida hotties. So far, I’ve been pretty good about sticking to the Paleo diet, but let’s not tell Mike O. about the absolutely amazing Pink Pop Rock Princess Martini (points for the name) I indulged in last night at Suite. What? I made up for it this morning with an egg white omelette loaded with proteins and veggies- oh and all this Chicago walking!

Till next week Brick Gals- Peace, Love & Burpees!
